Parent power in playground project 20 July 2010
Two years on from when residents of Foxborough Gardens Estate in Lewisham, said they wanted a childrens’ playground provided on the estate, it was officially opened on in June by Lewisham Council. The estate is managed by Pinnacle PSG who fully supported the project and helped to form the tenants and residents association essential to securing the funding. Pinnacle PSG also ensured residents were consulted at every stage of the project as well as designing the playground layout and overseeing the development of the project. The playground cost over £50,000 to complete and was mainly funded through the National Playbuilders Programme after Lewisham Council gave it their support in 2008. Extra funds were raised by the residents themselves who organised a fun day last summer. It is located over two adjacent sites on the estate and boasts equipment designed for younger (8 year olds) and older children (up to 13 year olds). Older children have the use of a zip slide and climbing frames whilst younger children have the usual swings as well as a birds nest swing, smaller climbing frames and a sandpit. There is even a gazebo for parents to shelter from the sun or rain whilst their children play. Although the playground was officially opened in early June 2010 the work was completed and youngsters have been using the playgrounds since April. Cat Holland, Chair of the Foxborough Gardens Tenants’ and Residents’ Association said, “The support we received from Pinnacle PSG and the Council and the finished playground is tremendous. “The can-do attitude of all concerned and the results of a lot of hard work by local residents and tenants is there for all to see and enjoy”, added Cat. Our photo shows Councillor Susan Wise, Lewisham Council’s Housing Cabinet Member getting some ‘help’ at the opening.
