Our response to the new Communities and Local Government household projections

This news will give some respite to hard-pressed councils in the south-east as the growth in households is expected to be greatest in the north of England.

In those areas, much public infrastructure is still in place following net migration southwards over the last few decades and, so, the pressures on council services should be manageable, especially as the young adults who form the majority of the growth tend to be low consumers of public services, thus easing potential budgetary issues.

More importantly though, the developing attractiveness of the north should help change mindsets towards being more outward-looking and entrepreneurial, both of which are crucial for long-term regional sustainability.”
